The Followers (not Admirers) of Jesus

Today in Washington, DC, a group of neo-conservative religious fundamentalists nicknamed "The Family" are gathering for their National Prayer breakfast. President Obama has been invited to address the group which raises a question: what will the President say on Uganda... given that Ugandan legislator David Bahati, the sponsor of the Anti-Homosexuality bill in his native country... reportedly will be in attendance. Author Jeff Sharlet has written a book on "The Family" and been interviewed on NPR and highlighted on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show". In interviews, Sharlet has made it clear that "The Family" has been largely behind sowing the seeds of hatred toward the LGBT community in Uganda, and that David Bahati is one of the group's African disciples.

In response to this, there are groups in several cities that will be joining in an American Prayer Hour at the same time as the National Prayer breakfast to call for justice, mercy, compassion, love for LGBT Africans, especially in Uganda.

My Episcopal hero Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire says prayer is good, but be careful what you ask for in it. Speaking to the National Press Club, Robinson said:

"We have a duty to confront those who are praying for those things that would break God's heart... you can talk about Jesus all day long, but if you are not doing what Jesus would have you do, then it matters not. God save us from the admirers of Jesus!"

Amen to that!

Obama can't upstage Gene, so we'll see what comes out of the two meetings. The National Press Club, I know it well.
